Internet Safety task 1.19

Internet Safety

Task 1.19

Discuss with a partner what you would do in the following situations:

A)     You have been chatting to another boy/girl and you want to meet up

In this situation I would first check if I had any other contacts who know the boy/girl, if my contacts know the boy/girl I would ask them how they know them, if they only know them through the internet then it probably isn’t safe to meet up. However if they know them from their past e.g. school then it’s probably safe to meet up.

B)     You are on a social network site and you see a rude picture

In this situation I would report the picture to the social network site but I would make sure that my identity was protected when making the complaint so that the person whose picture it was doesn’t cause trouble.

C)     You see pictures of someone you don’t get on with on a social network site. There is an option for you to write something below.

In this situation I wouldn’t write anything, if you don’t like someone don’t lie and say that you like the picture and don’t start trouble for yourself by saying nasty things about the picture.

D)     You notice that one of your friends has not protected their website; giving anyone access to see what is on their profile.

In this situation I would advise my friend to change their profile settings so that only close friends and family can see their profile because if they have anything personal about themselves or about their identity then someone could use this information for fraud or against them e.g. if they are subject to cyber bullying and a relative has passed away then the cyber bullies could really offend them.

E)      Your friend has been chatting to a girl/boy for a while but does not really believe he/she is actually who he/she says he/she is.

In this situation I would advise my friend to do a background check on the boy/girl then check if they had any other contacts who know the boy/girl, if they had contacts who know the boy/girl I would ask them how they know them, if they know them from their past e.g. school I would ask the girl/boy questions related to their school life e.g. a teachers name who taught them a certain lesson at school, because it would be hard for a fraud to get hold of this information.

F)      Your friend uses IM and webcam to talk to other friends. There is one person he/she chats to who never turns on his/ her webcam, making the excuse that is does not work.

In this situation I would tell my friend to if they wanted to continue contact then keep their webcam off but my first suggestion would be to delete the contact.
